Selective Pallet Rack - Steps to Selection

Once you’ve determined the space you have available for your storage rack installation and some particulars on the materials to be stored, selecting components is easy. Remember, all you have to consider are two basic parts, the upright and the beam. Follow these steps and you are well on your way to selecting the basic components for your Republic storage rack system.

Step 1 Assess Your Storage Area



• Locate doors, columns, other obstructions on your floor plan
• Check overhead clearances for girders, duct work, lights, obstructions that may reduce storage height
  

Step 2 Determine Load Characteristics



• Height, width and depth of load and pallet
• Weight of load and pallet
• Will loaded pallets be stacked on top of each other?
  

Step 3 Determine Length of Beam



• Take width of pallet or width of load, whichever is greater
• Multiply by number of loads per shelf
• Add clearances: 3"-4" between upright frame and load; 4" between loads
• Check clearance requirements of straddle type forklift
  

Step 4 Determine Beam Capacity



• Take number of loads per shelf
• Multiply by weight of load
• Select required beam from beam capacity tables
  

Step 5 Determine Upright Frame



• Length Take pallet depth
• Subtract 4"-6" for upright frame depth
  

Step 6 Determine Upright Frame Height



• Take height of load & pallet
• Add 6" clearance (top of load to bottom of beam)
• Add beam height (3 ½"-6")
• Multiply total by number of shelf levels & round to the nearest foot
  

Step 7 Determine Upright Frame Capacity



• Take load per shelf from step 4
• Multiply by number of shelf levels
• Select required upright frame from the upright frame capacity tables
  

Step 8 Determine Length of Wall and Row Spacers



Wall spacers - 6" clearance plus pallet overhang


Row spacers - 2" clearance plus twice the pallet overhang
